The story
The Moscow Mule was invented in 1941 as a marketing collaboration between a vodka distributor, a ginger beer maker, and a copper mug manufacturer. It's one of the few origin stories in cocktails that is both entirely commercial and entirely honest. The drink works because ginger, lime, and vodka are a natural triad — each element does something the others don't. This spring edition introduces blood orange, one of the season's most dramatic citrus fruits. Blood oranges are available from January through April in most markets; their window is narrow, which makes them ideal for a seasonal cocktail that actually respects what seasonal means.
Tasting note
Crimson in a copper mug. Blood orange sweetness hits first, then ginger heat rises through the mid-palate, with lime and vodka providing the backbone.
